Home Learning

At our Academy, we believe that effective home learning plays an important role in supporting students' academic success and personal development. Home learning is designed to complement classroom teaching by providing opportunities for students to:

  • Recall and retain knowledge from previous lessons.

  • Consolidate and strengthen their understanding of key concepts and skills.

  • Extend and deepen learning through further exploration of subjects.

  • Broaden their cultural capital by engaging with a range of enriching experiences and resources.

  • Develop positive reading habits and a lifelong love of reading.

  • Foster creativity, curiosity and independent thinking.

  • Build resilience, organisation and a commitment to self-improvement through reflective and independent learning.

Home learning is planned strategically by subject leaders to support students' learning and progress at each stage of their education.

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3, approaches to home learning vary between subjects to ensure activities are meaningful and appropriate to the curriculum. Tasks are designed to reinforce classroom learning, encourage wider reading and develop independent study habits. Many tasks make use of digital technology and online learning platforms, helping students to build confidence in using ICT as a tool for learning and to support the students with instant feedback.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4, students can expect to receive home learning on a weekly basis. Activities typically take between 30 and 60 minutes to complete and are carefully designed to support GCSE studies by strengthening subject knowledge, developing examination skills and improving long-term retention of learning.

Where classes are taught by more than one teacher, staff work together to coordinate the timing of home learning tasks and avoid unnecessary duplication.

Reading and Independent Learning

Reading is a key part of our home learning programme and contributes significantly to students' achievement across the curriculum.

  • Reading Plus is our dedicated reading programme, and all Key Stage 3 students are expected to complete at least 30 minutes of reading each week through the platform.

  • Students are encouraged to have a book they are reading for pleasure at all times. This may be a personal book, a text borrowed from the Learning Resource Centre, or a title accessed through the Academy's online library.

  • High-quality reading opportunities are promoted across all subject areas to support literacy development and wider learning.

Expectations and Support

To help students achieve success with their home learning:

  • All home learning tasks are recorded on Synergy, enabling students and parents to access information easily.

  • Teachers provide clear instructions and guidance so that students understand how to complete each task successfully.

  • Students are encouraged to approach home learning with integrity and independence. While technology can support learning, students should ensure that all submitted work reflects their own understanding and effort.

  • Home learning forms part of students' wider development as learners, promoting responsibility, self-reflection and effective study habits.

Recognition and Celebration

We recognise and celebrate students who demonstrate commitment to their studies through positive engagement with home learning. Achievement points are awarded to students who consistently show dedication, independence and a strong approach to learning, reflecting our Academy's core values.

Home Learning and Personal Development

We view home learning as an opportunity not only to consolidate learning but also to expand students' understanding of the wider world. Where online learning platforms are used, teachers can access valuable insights into student progress and use this information to inform future teaching and support.

Through our home learning programme, we aim to create meaningful learning experiences that encourage academic achievement, personal growth and a lifelong love of learning.
