KS3 and KS4 Modern Foreign Language

KS3 and KS4 MFL

Students in Year 7 study French every week. They communicate in French in every lesson and grow in confidence. In Year 8 and 9 students continue to study French for more hours per week, steadily building the detail and complexity of the language they use.

Students who wish to continue with their language study choose to take GCSE French during the Year 9 Options process.

Students leaving school with language skills may find they have the advantage when applying for a place in further education and are, additionally, much more employable in today’s world.

Students have the opportunity of taking part in an eight day residential visit to France, spending time in Brittany, Paris and the Somme. This popular and long-standing educational trip is an ideal experience for students hoping to take a GCSE in the subject as it provides daily opportunities for them to use their French in real life situations.

The MFL Department love to give students the chance to shine. We award a “star of the month” certificate to two students in each KS3 class every month, displaying their photo in the Languages corridor. In addition, we regularly hold extra competitions and challenges in which students can exercise their ingenuity, creativity and knowledge of language. Our French café is open every half term to enable the sampling of typical French treats.

KS3 Assessment

Informal assessment is on-going during all lessons and modular assessment also takes place. Students are encouraged to re-draft and improve their work in order to access higher grades. Each year group has a specifically designed exercise book cover showing the topic menu for that year. On the back of the cover is the student progress tracker on which is displayed their end of year target. Students update their trackers each term and can see the progress they are making as well as how to achieve the next stage in each of the four main skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Current Year 10 and 11 students follow the AQA GCSE French syllabus and take final exams at the end of Year 11 in Listening and Reading.
