KS4 Subject aims/course

KS4 students study AQA Specification B: The Modern World.

During the two year programme of study there are three assessments which count towards the final grade in this subject.

Assessment 1: Paper One - International Relations.

Topics covered:
  • Causes of World War One
  • Treaty of Versailles and the League of nations
  • Causes of World War Two

Date of Assessment- End of year 11


Assessment Two: The Historical Enquiry (Coursework) - Britain during the war. During the historical enquiry, students are expected to write two essays in exam conditions which assess students’ ability to assess the usefulness and reliability of evidence. This equates to 25% of students overall grade.

  • The Home Front during WW1
  • DORA Recruitment and conscription
  • Women and work
  • Threat of invasion
  • The Home Front during World War Two
  • Evacuation Air Raids
  • Conscription

Date of Assessment Term 2/3 of Year 10


Assessment Three: Paper Two - Depth studies.

Topics covered:

America during the 1920’s

  • Mass Production Growth in consumer industries
  • Development in entertainment - Hollywood
  • Growth of racism during the 1920’s - Jim Crow Laws and the Ku Klux Klan
  • Prohibition and the rise of organised crime - Al Capone

Race relations during the 1950’s

  • History of the Ku Klux Klan and Jim Crow Laws
  • Civil Rights Movement during the 1950’s and 1960’s
  • Little Rock High School
  • Rosa Parks
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott
  • Freedom Marches
  • Martin Luther King
  • Malcolm X and the Black Power Movement

Hitler’s Germany

  • Hitler’s rise to power - Chancellor and then Dictator
  • Racism and persecution - Jews Women and the Church
  • Hitler youth and education Police State - SS and Gestapo 

Date of assessment is the end of Year 11.


Catch-up clubs

These are clubs designed for students who need extra help throughout the course of the year. These GCSE History classes are available two nights a week after school. In these classes we go over the work which has already been taught and this reinforces students understanding of the topic. These classes are open to any students studying GCSE History.

Revision classes

GCSE revision classes are offered to Year 10 and 11 students. These classes are available from the beginning of the academic year to prepare for the upcoming exams. Information on these classes can be obtained from Mr Foster at the below e-mail address.
